Biggest problem: no ongoing development.

I have no "stability" problems (e.g. crashes or dataloss). Somewhat glitchy UI (behaves better on the N800 with the Diablo Turbo improved touchscreen driver).

last.fm plugin scrobbles fine but fails to stream the last.fm stations ("unable to resolve url").

All fine and good but I cannot get the video icon to show up on the main screen. sigh

I give it five stars for features, three stars for being a hungry for resources, and two stars for quirks and bugs (for example, it won't start up for me unless it has an internet connection, or won't play podcasts when running if the internet connection goes away). If I only used my n800 as a media player then I'd not mind the resource hungryness, as it is I've switched to gpodder for podcasts and ordinary media player or mplayer for other media files.

Even if it loads quite slowly, it looks simply great and has a lot of plugin support. Besides that, it has taken a lot of developers attention, so the number of plugins just keeps growing. Great app! :)

I love the multi threading for downloading RSS podcasts. it lacks the ability to purge RSS history though.

I do not have very many apps running on my N810, but Canola2 Beta 11 will not load. From what I've read about it, there seems to be conflicts with other apps, and nothing suggested has allowed this to load (I've uninstalled, ran cleanup, reinstalled about 1/2 dozen times). I'm not going to wipe my N810 just to try this app. If it will not install or load, what good is it? I think I'll just keep using the stock Media Player app. Very disappointing when it comes so highly recommended.

Great Media Player, However, I agree with Michael, the answer button should be used. Taking out the n800 is not very practical. :D

I think it takes too much time to start Canola2 on N810.

Usability is quite good and I can use this software without stylus. That's good.

Picture viewer is mediocre and I like more the original picture viewer. It is faster and I love that feature to turn pics 90° for bigger view. Actually I just wondering why nobody can't make picture viewer without those black stripes. I understand ratio but if almost every picture has white background why stripes still black? Think like Philips do with Ambilight.

Perfect Media Playerfor Internet Tablet. I have a sugestion: When i'm listening Music in the street and i'd like to change song, i must put my n800 out of my pocket and that make me bored. PLease Marcelo make an optional update to go to the next song with the answer button of the headset.

Merci! Au revoir

simply the best media player for nokia tablets, even in beta version.

there are things to improve, but it is very easy to use (optimized for finger usage) and includes very much functionality - audio playback, audio streaming (internet radio), video playback, podcasting, youtube, photos, upnp support.

can be improved via plugins!

Simply put, the best multimedia application for the N800/N810. It does everything that an IPOD Touch can do and more. It has superceded all my expectations! The cover art is just like Whoa!

Really, the most basic stuff is still not working, like supporting all basic audio formats (aac, m4a) of the platform, which are by default supported by the OS, so this application is TOTALLY USELESS.

And all progress seems to be heading to something really weird stuff. GET THE BASICS IN ORDER BEFORE HEADING INTO OTHER AREAS.

CANOLA2 ON DIABLO : Please, if you are a early adopter, don't use the download now button. UNFORTUNATELY we only new about the release today, like everyone else, so we are working on the porting, somethings have changed so it's not just upload again. Sorry for that, but it was beyond our reach to avoid this.

My Rating is 4, because there's always room for improvements: ))

After giving canola2 at the beginning 2 stars now its one of my favourite application on the tablet. + UPNP together with mplayer (not together with the build-in-mediaplayer who is to slow for most upnp-streamed videos) + possibility to save youtube videos + have a break fuction in lastfm + scrobeling songs for lastfm + rudimentary playlist creation is possible - no (incremental) search (but planned for the next version) - difficulties if canola should find and handle .aac media

First impressions were excellent. Perhaps a bit fiddly to get set up but great functionality and looks. BUT... My poor battery! I walk to the pub listening to Canola, pause it while I'm drinking with my friends and it's still draining power while it's paused. So it has to be back to the standard Media Player for me :-(

In its current beta form the functions are obviously limited, and some of the design needs tweaking (for example the username for plugins ought to be entered in the plugin itself, not on the settings page).

However, the UI design is so good and intuitive, this shows a very plausible way forward for the tablets to become mainstream devices that even non-techie people buy.

In short, excellent stuff, it would be VERY interesting to see it integrate more functions beyond just multimedia, for example web browsing and e-mail.

In the way to be one of the best apps for Maemo. Clearly misses some features however. In my point of view the most important is a better integration with the tablet - or the possibility to run Canola not in fullscreen. Good work, guys!

Works great for me. The interface is very pretty -- nicest looking application for the N800. Easy to navigate with just fingers too.

Just wish you could:

  • Press the top button to minimize.
  • Play ogg and flac files.
  • Play files off a remote share.
  • PLay music from a daap server (i.e. iTunes share).

But given that this is a beta, I can get by without the above. I'm sure new features will trickle in down the line.

Installed fine, looks pretty. Irritating that it takes over fullscreen and won't allow itself to be switched out of it, although you can use the menu-button to switch to a different app.

Doesn't pick up any of my ogg/vorbis music, despite having ogg-support installed.

Great work on an all-in-one media center for maemo. This is the application you want if you don't want to install five apps or experiment with everything else that's out there. Highly recommended!

There were no problems installing Canola form the Canola site . However Maemo and the N800 OS2008 Application Manager failed. Very sleek UI. (I don't bother but my kids loved it: "now it's something!") The Photo Views are Phantastic. One stars more than Quiver !.

However for Audio I still use the standard mediaplayer on my N800 OS 2008. Canola finds less wma / mp3 files than my mediaplayer. Don't know how to use the playlists and the thumbnails are not filled. Canola should at least use the same playlists as the standard mediaplayer. In Audio the Play Random mode does not launch playing music. No extras also in the video. Does not find or play my wmv files. Strange start-up: takes almost a minute. Can't in any mode add files. Abel.

This one has many good ideas, but it looks far from being finished. The photo viewer is great, but it lacks the ability to zoom.

The scrolling item lists are awkward to navigate with fingers and it's too easy to select an item by accident. Also the UI doesn't really fit a media center. With its "folders" and "subfolders" it's more like a control center. Sometimes you really have to click through many different steps in order to reach your goal.

Coverart and video thumbnails are not supported out of the box. At least loading existing cover arts from "cover.jpg" files or similar, could have been implemented.

All in all, mediocre usability, slightly inappropriate UI design, and some nice eye candy.

Personally, I liked Canola 1 better.
