Excellent application and wonderful tool for the tablet! It is far more than a text editor. The best for notes and drawings. Very nice functions to work with pdf-files. Great app, thanks a lot! It runs very well on Diablo, if you follow the instructions above!

I remind all of you that there is NO DIABLO UPDATE of Xournal. The latest, working, version is this one.

If you've update Xournal to the "alpha" Diablo version, remove it, disable Maemo Extras Devel (for Diablo) and re-install this version.

Thank you.

Same issue as Remoran; I'm also running Diablo.

I installed xournal on 10 Oct 2008 and it was one of my favorite apps. I used it not only for drawing, but for note-taking and marking-up a pdf document for revision.

I upgraded on 27 Nov 2008 and now the app sometimes doesn't open (though you can see it in the task manager). When it does, the icons don't work, so for example after clicking on the eraser, it still draws as a pen. The icons have changed too, critically with the "undo" missing (you can undo from the pull-down menu). The application is now next to useless. Other than by install date, I can't even tell you what version I'm running, because "help" no longer works at all.

Please, please either sort this out or tell us how to go back to the previous version. Thank you!

Excellent port, this kind of tool is ideal for a tablet!

Installation in Diablo is tricky, you must follow Aniello's instructions very carefully. He has great commitment to users.

Doesn't install on my N800 (Chinook) - application installer says libhildonfm2 is needed. Shouldn't the package handle dependencies automatically? Shame.

I have to say Xournal is one of the most impressive applications out right now besides the more popular projects like mplayer and maemo-mapper. It has such huge potential and after using it for several days to draw schematics, plans for building things and more, I came up with the wishlist to end all wishlists to make it the ultimate drawing/notes application on Maemo.

  • Selectable/customizable buttons for modes/tools (mentioned elsewhere, very important)
  • "Orthogonal" mode which will cause lines/objects being drawn to be snap to the X/Y axis depending on which direction they point: at 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees, perhaps the 45 degree increments. Controlled by holding down the center button or a option button.
  • End-point snap: snap to the corners of the closest polygon or end of nearest line/point. Highlighting the potential snap points and the line/object is dragged nearer would be so helpful.
  • Grid snap: snap to the grid paper itself or fractions of a grid. Simple, great for getting objects and lines to meet perfectly.
  • Visible eraser outline: when in eraser mode a outline of the eraser shape is shown to indicate where you're erasing. Only shown when contacting screen, eraser only active beyond a certain pressure value (a user-set option)
  • Visible cursor: just like the eraser outline, showing exactly where you're about to draw until you press hard enough to trigger drawing.
  • Trim/stretch multiple objects: great for alignment of lines/objects ending at the same X or Y point.
  • Auto-backup of current drawing.

If I have time I may try to implement some of these myself. Some are simple and compelling enough (like grid snap) that they beg to be done!

The PDF annotation and export feature alone make this a killer app. On top of that, it has shape recognition and pressure sensitivity that makes it a useful drawing tool.

Great app. The Icing on the cake would be portrait mode support.

The app is terrific. This update is a disaster. The app installs but does not boot. Have done everything to get it to work. Nothing. Prior to this, the program was good. I am not alone on this. Am running diablo and all other programs run without a problem. Fix this update! Now!

I'd really like a portrait oriented background, and even portrait oriented icons, please?

That is, I'd like to be able to hold the N800 vertically in my hand to make it easier to write.

Excellent - what the tablet is made for.

Need easily modifyable choice of GUI buttons - e.g. adding a shape detection button. Have no need for zoom buttons on this platform. What /does/ that ink bottle do? (I know, config file...)

Anidel's port is a killer app for the tablets. Some posts on xournal as a word processor and on converting hand-written notes to the xournal format are on my blog, http://n800-as-a-professional-tool.blogspot.com A great add-on would be pasting text, bitmaps or vector drawings from other apps. This could turn xournal into a presentation editor, which lacks for the platform.

Easily 5 stars.

One of the most useful ports ever and the time Anidel puts into this is brilliant.

The help file is great and the functionality of the program is great.

You can even export to pdf! Which is great for viewing on many platforms.

Absolutely brilliant.

Very very easy to use, LOTS of useful options, and this app really suits being on a tablet because it turns it into the ultimate sketching and note-taking pad.

It includes pencils, rubbers, highlighters, with thickness and colour settings, plus more advanced options like layering and various graphics settings. The graphics render very well, and the pages can be laid out in practically any fashion you want, with a choice of paper styles and colours too. You can view lots of pages at once, or one at a time, and zoom in and out of any page while still being able to edit. There's even a conventional text input option for typing. The attention to detail on this app is great.

Perhaps best of all, you can export your notes and sketches as PDF files which means you can easily e-mail them to other people or import them into other applications.

Highly recommended, my favourite tablet app so far.

I use this for taking lecture notes. Very useful.

The 0.4 version seems a lot faster than the 0.3 (iirc) version on OS2007. Adding a new page used to be quite slow.
